Suggested Emergency Preparedness Items

Here is a list of the preparedness supplies that we have at our home.  To the left of each item is a link where we bought ours.  Remember that I don't receive any benefit if you buy your supplies here.  I only want to make it easier for you to find what you want.  If you find a better source, please let me know and I'll post it here.  Remember that each Go-Kit should be individualized for your own needs and your mobility requirements.    We recommend that you keep one in your home and one in each car.  You never know where you will be when a disaster may strike.  And it may be hours or even days before you can make it back home.

Most of the items are available for purchase at Amazon, Walmart, Lowe's,
Emergency Solutions and the Dollar Store.

Quakehold A-Maze-ing Picture Hooks Best picture hooks we've ever found. Use two hooks for large heavy items. The hook has a "maze" that the wire fits into. So it makes it nearly impossible for a picture or mirror to fall off the wall in an earthquake and hurt somebody.  Set of four, for heavy mirrors, pictures and art work; unique design traps backing wire to stop it jumping off hook; two heavy duty hanger can hold heavyweight objects up to 100lbs; can be screwed into wall stud.
Cabinet Door touch latches ( Set of 4) Best latch we've seen! Highly recommended. Note that the old style magnetic latches do NOT hold in an earthquake. A demo "cabinet" with latch will be available during the fair.  Push Open/Push Close cabinet latches. Upgrade your kitchen today! Cabinets become easy-to-open touch activated, and stay locked closed when not in use to provide protection in an earthquake
Corner brackets Use to attach large furniture pieces to wall to keep from falling on people during an earthquake.  Remember to attach to a wall stud.
Quakehold steel furniture cable to secure heavy furniture such as bookcases, file cabinets, etc. When properly installed, keeps heavy furniture from falling on top of people and hurting them during an earthquake. Holdrite QuickStrap QB-50-F Soft Belt-Style Water Heater Strap A local plumber recommended this soft belt style of strap. If your water heater is not securely strapped, it can fall over and you lose precious water. Worse, if it is a gas water heater, it can cause a fire.  Secures tanks up to 80 gallons.  Features front side belt locking system.  QuickBelt system includes: (4) straps, (4) lag bolts, and (2) belt clips.
AT&T 210M Trimline Corded Phone When power goes out, you won't be able to use your cordless phone. This one works with the electricity supplied by the phone line, not your power line.

Automatic Gas Shutoff Valve Not available for purchase, but consider having a local contractor install this on the gas meter in your home.  During an earthquake of sufficient size (typically a 5.2) it automatically shuts off the gas supply to your home.  Currently I know of two contractors who install these valves ... Groth Gates and Robbin Heating and Air.  If you know of others, please let me know.
